Artículo 33 | 2019
Article 33 of the Constitution of Mexico says that “Foreigners may not in any way participate
in the political affairs of the country.” While in Mexico City, I staged a performance around
the limits of the possible interpretations of “political affairs” specified in this law. For a week,
I carried flyers printed with the article, and every so often I asked someone I encountered at random
in the city if they were a foreigner. If the answer was no, I continued on my way, but if the answer was
yes, I identified myself as a foreigner and handed them a flyer, with the intention of starting a
conversation about how they interpreted the article.
