Let it burn | 2017
Sculpture made using twenty-two 5-inch, 100W
halogen light bulbs mounted on a wheeled clothing rack to
mobilize the structure. The bulbs are connected to a
series of socket light splitters, outlet-to-socket light
plugs, rolled extension cords and outlet power strips
allowing them to be connected to any standard electrical
wall outlet. On the glass surface of the bulbs handwritten
letters spell out the sentences "Let it burn" on one side
and "Let them burn" on the other. When connecting the
sculpture to the power source two things happen: the bulbs
generate a lot of heat; and, after a few minutes, the
electrical system collapses due to the high energy demand
and the circuit fuses, interrupting the electric current.
When this happens, it is necessary to go to the fuse box
and reactivate the energy flow again. This structure,
precarious, mobile and made with cheap materials, can
momentarily and partially collapse a complex system.
