Conspicuous Demonstration | 2017
< >
A series of digital images constructed from the superimposition of hundreds of photographs of the same action: a vinyl flag carried on a circular route in one small place for hours. The title comes from the economic term ‘conspicuous consumption’ that refers to the excessive spending of money on luxury goods and services to publicly demonstrate the economic power of the buyer. The re-contextualization of the term in the title points to the idea of demonstration —within the traditional protest choreographies accepted and promoted by Western liberal democracies— as a luxury activity that is reserved mainly for a privileged population that believes and participates in a system where its voice is heard and is not systematically discriminated against.
